I know Hidalgo and Quiapo, in general, is notorious as one of Manila’s shabby and crime infested areas (full of pirated CDs/DVDs, counterfeit electronics, snatchers, garbage).
I was surprised myself when I found out that it is highly recommended by other photographers in the Philippines as a place to find a wider range of photographic/videographic equipment at a cheaper price than in malls. I bought my first camera, a Canon Powershot A700, in Hidalgo Quiapo when I was in college and a Nikon D40 last year.
I have nothing to complain about the quality of my purchases there.
Price difference
The price difference if you were to buy a camera in Hidalgo Quiapo as compared to most stores in most cases is significant. In a store here in SM City Iloilo, the difference is enough to cover my round trip airfare to Manila and a few days’ expenses.
If you’re wondering why the stores in Hidalgo Quiapo sell it for such a low price. It’s because space rentals in Quiapo are much cheaper and because they sell most items with a local/store warranty. Meaning, if you need to have it fixed/replaced, you won’t be able to do it in just any service center of your camera brand, but only in the store where you bought the camera.
How to go to Hidalgo
Hidalgo St. is very near Carriedo LRT 1 Station. To get there, ride the LRT (Yellow Line) and get off at Carriedo Station. Using the Google map as a reference, walk further along Carrideo St., at the first intersection you will find SM Quiapo to your right. Enter SM and go to the other side of the building. When you exit, you will be somewhere in front of Watson’s and Henry’s. the other stores are not far from there. There’s a Banco de Oro branch along the street to your right, in front of it is Mayer.

As an alternative, check out the online camera shops based in the Philippines.
Remember to be on high alert when you’re in Hidlago Quiapo! It’s not one of the safest places in Manila so the quickest you can go in and out, the better. The safest places there are: inside the LRT Station, inside SM, and inside the stores. If you’re anywhere outside these areas, walk fast and be extra alert. Pagdating kasi sa image the best ang d5100 at sa video ay eos 600d,kung pang photo ang hanap mo ok na ang d5100.
Sa hidalgo kasi ang 600d ay around 37,000 plus ang 600d, samantalang ang d5100 ay around 33k pero 3 years warranty, kung decided ka na d3100 mag hidalgo ka na, kung 600d naman mag online ka nalang pero 1 years warranty lang. suggestion lang ito bahala ka parin mag decide, dahil ako di parin makapag decide napupuyat narin ako pagiisip kung ano ang d best decission.

I bought D3100 red today, 11/30 from Avenue. Yung kit ng black 26K, 27K yung red. Tinawadan ko na lang kaya nakuha ko yung red ng 26K. I wanted to buy just the body and a higher end lens pero kit talaga kahit saan.
Ang alam ko hindi pa napepeke ng chinese ang dslr coz of its complexity. Ang alam ko din sa ngayon lahat ng nikon sa thailand gawa kasi nagka problema sila sa kanilang pabrika sa Japan coz of tsunami.

Kung may pambili ka narin lang ng lens bilin mo nalang ay body wag mo na isama ang kitlens at bumili ka ng bukod na 18-105 mm lens good for portrait and landscape. Pero may isa suggest ako sayo pagaralan mo na muna mabuti ang kitlens mo madami na kasi magagawa yan,
minsan kahit sa mga matatagal ng gumagamit ng dslr hindi nila napapansin ang powers ng kitlens 18-55 mm lens, maari mo itong gamitin gaya ng kuha ng prime lens at pede rin magamit ito pagkuha ng macro photography, halimbawa yung mga insects, mahal kasi ang macro lens ang pinaka mura ay nasa 10k pataas, pero pag binaliktad mo ang kabit ng lens mo na kit, bumili ka lang ng macro reverse ring para maikabit mo na ang kitlens mo parehas din ng kuha ng mamahalin mga macrolens. Napaka mura lang ng reverse ring 350 lang against 12,000 macro lens ng nikkor.

almost all of the store in hidalgo may pentax. pero tumaas ung price nila ng 3k, i think its because of the warranty. yung napagtanungan ko kasi kahapon sa hidalgo ay ung warranty nila ay sa dealer na mismo. Like nikon, sa columbia na ang warranty.

Naku RR mag-ingat ka dyan sa nagbebenta sa sau ng ng d60 ng 12K. Hindi makatutuhanan ang presyo. Basta wag na wag mong bigay ang pera kung hindi mo nakikita ang item ng personal. Kasi may alam akong nag ganyan nagpadala ng pera pero hindi pa niya natatanggap yong item. I really want to buy a Nikon D5100 as my very first camera (and for family use) and my dad says Quiapo is one of the best sellers when it comes to cheap but functional slrs. My dad only loans 25k and I am willing to save up my baon and add it up. As far as I know the lowest price is 32k along with the 18-55 lense.

yeah, there are lots of 135 and 120 format films in Hidalgo. Stores sell traditional black and white and color negatives. Fuji film sells slide films like Velvia.
Hasselblad? I don’t think you can find that in Hidalgo, try ebay.com.
