If you’re wondering where you can buy dSLR cameras and other photographic equipment in the Philippines for the cheapest/lowest prices, then it’s in Hidalgo, Quiapo. I know Hidalgo Quiapo, in general, is notorious as one of Manila’s shabby and crime infested areas (full of pirated CDs/DVDs, counterfeit electronics, snatchers, garbage).
I was surprised myself after finding out that it’s highly recommended by other photographers in the Philippines as a place to find a wider range of photographic/videographic equipment at a cheaper price than in malls. I bought my first camera, a Canon Powershot A700, in Hidalgo Quiapo when I was in college and a Nikon D40 last year.
I have nothing to complain about the quality of my purchases there.
The price difference if you were to buy a camera in Hidalgo Quiapo as compared to most stores in malls is quite huge. In a store here in SM City Iloilo, the difference is enough to cover my round trip airfare to Manila and a few days’ expenses.
If you’re wondering why the stores in Hidalgo Quiapo sell it for such a low price, it’s because space rentals in Quiapo are much cheaper and because they sell most items with a local/store warranty. Meaning, if you need to have it fixed/replaced, you won’t be able to do it in just any service center of your camera brand, but only in the store where you bought the camera.
Hidalgo St. is very near Carriedo LRT 1 Station. To get there ride the LRT (Yellow Line) and get off at Carriedo Station. Using the Google map as a reference, walk further along Carrideo St., at the first intersection you will find SM Quiapo to your right. Enter SM and go to the other side of the building. When you exit, you will be somewhere in front of Watson’s and Henry’s. the other stores are not far from there. There’s a Banco de Oro branch along the street to your right, in front of it is Mayer.

For point and shoot cameras and DSLRs, Henrys and Mayers are two of the most popular stores. Depending on the item, prices may vary in each store, so it would be best to contact them beforehand for prices.
Remember to be on high alert when you’re in Hidlago Quiapo! It’s not one of the safest places in Manila so the quickest you can go in and out, the better. The safest places there are: inside the LRT Station, inside SM, and inside the stores. If you’re anywhere outside these areas, walk fast and be extra alert. It would also be best if you bring one or more persons along with you during your visit. More tips could be found at “Hidalgo Quiapo Warning” in the DPP Forums.

I love Hidalgo! Films here are really cheap (and some kuyas and ates might give you discounts if they like you) as well as some camera accessories and equipments.
although, I have to mention, the place’s not as ‘crime infested’ as some people might think. Some people kasi are discouraged from going to Hidalgo (or even Quiapo) kasi they are scared that they might die or something. And they are missing a LOT because of that, methinks.
I think the security here (or the lackthereof) does not differ from the rest of the metro. Don’t wear too much jewelry, don’t go parading you wallets and cellphones, be mindful of your stuff, be smart and alert you’ll be just fine :)
I love it too… sometimes I go there just for the siomai infront of Henry’s … it’s not the best tasting siomai but it’s cheap and worth the trip to Hidlago. With regards to being safe, I agree … it applies to most parts of Metro Manila, not just in Quiapo.

Quiapo is my favorite favorite place in the Metro! From the statue of Poong Nazareno, to the “tisa” pavements of Hidalgo, and the LRT ride. I love everything about it. And Aika is right, Quiapo is just like any other street in Metro Manila, it’s not like you cant leave the place without losing your purse. Being street smart pays a lot. :)

I have no issues nor experienced any problem at all (with my looks which above par and can easily be distinguished at a higher class level, yet I just act normal there with casual clothing like a Lacoste shirt). Parking is merely P50 is guaranteed safe ( I normally park besides the SM store there ) – given that my car is a BMW. What I loved about Hidalgo St. is that on top of the cheap cost they offer.. YOU AS CUSTOMER CAN HAGGLE TO THE LOWEST POSSIBLE COST YOU CAN PAY!….
I myself have not personally experienced security issues during my visit to Quiapo, it does help to be careful though.

There are really a lot of factors to consider if you’re comparing Nikon and Canon as a brand. You need to look for entry-level models for each brand. For the latest line of Nikon, it’s the D60, D3000, and D5000. For Canon, it’s the 1000D (Rebel XS) and 450D (Rebel XSi). Google the reviews for each model so you can base your decision on what fits you and the purpose you’re going to use the camera for.

Would have been easier to compare two units of the same brand. I can’t say actually since I haven’t tried the Canon 1000D but for the Nikon, I suggest waiting for / getting the NikonD3100 instead.

Hello Edward … it really depends on your preference. I guess any entry level DSLR from trusted brands will do. Your best bet is to find out what cameras other photographers that you like use.

Im not a pro in camera, also a starter, but if I were you, Ill buy D5000.
1. Ill go with the lower mega pixel.
2. For DSLR, its best to use the viewfinder when taking pictures, but sometimes, when you are positioned in an angle where you cannot use the viewfinder, the live viewfinder combined with the swivel option wil help you a lot to take the best shot.
3. FPS should also be considered, D5000 can take 4 frame per second, D3100 only 3.
4. The ISO level is already good, unless you need a higher ISO, D3100 (12800 with boost) will be handy.
5. Video on D5000 is not HD, but its already good, unless you are planning to play your movie in a HD screen, you wont see the difference.
6. And the exposure level is good, with +/-5 exposure.
7. For the price, this is from Jeptall,
NIKON D3100 (30000PESOS)
NIKON D5000 w/18-55vr(30500pesos)
with 500 pesos difference, I’ll go with D5000.

I have never encountered bad reception from Mayer’s since I make sure that I look/act like a sure buyer (even though hindi naman minsan).

For general travel photography, the kit lens is fine. For sports photography, you need a lens with a long range zoom and a fast aperture. If you’re torn with choosing which lens you’re going to buy, just stick with the kit lens until you get the hang of things.

Choosing between a Canon with a Nikon … both are fine brands, you will not make a mistake with any of them. I have no experience with Canons … but with choosing which Nikon model, it really depends on your budget and intended use.
If you require more professional quality photos then go for the higher-end models (D300 and above) since they cope better with the high performance demands of sports photography.
If you’re planning on taking pics just for personal use, any of Nikons’ lower end line (D3100, D5000, D90) will do. Invest more on your lenses later … a lens with an long zoom (at least 200mm at the longest) and aperture of F2.8 or faster is best for sports.

1. Know the meaning of the acronym DSLR. (Baka may magtanong sayo na tropa mo na gusto mo yabangan kung ano ang ibig sabihin ng DSLR, e di mo masagot at mapahiya ka pa. Sabihin pa ng tropa mo, meaning lang ng DSLR di mo pa alam, gamitin pa kaya yan.) btw DSLR means Digital single-lens reflex camera.
2. Do your own research. (Huwag ka umasa sa mga sasabihin ng iba kung alin ang camera na mas maganda, some camera enthusiast a.k.a (feeling pro photographer) ay sasabihin sa iyo na maganda ang Nikon, ung iba naman Canon, ung iba Pintax pag Bisayang Camera enthusiast kuno ang napagtanungan mo. Exercise your brain and do a research about the types, functions, and the price of the camera that you are aiming. Another thing, some photographer (ito mga pro photographer talaga) some of them are Nikon Fanboy ang some of them are Canon Fanboy and about .00001% of them are Pentax, Sony Alpha, fanboy, note ito ung mga photographer na di naman talaga mga pro dahil kung pro ka Nikon or Canon brands talaga bibilhin mo. Huwag ka masyado maniwala sa mga comments at mga bias na paliwanag ng mga fanboys. Again do your own research, in that way you will learn something about photography that will be useful if you pursue your photography delusion.
3. Do you have LOTS of MONEY to burn. Be sure that you have a very good budget if you are considering to buy a DSLR. Even if someone tells you that there are lots of budget/ entry level DSLR in our market today that you can afford. Think twice. Why? Bcoz even the so called entry level DSLR cost arount 25K – 35k. and using your money as a fuel to burn fire did’nt stop upon buying a low cost DSLR kuno. Bcoz again, even the entry level daw na DSLR also needs other accessories and lens in order to maximize its performance. Useless lang at walang silbi ang DSLR mo kung d mo rin bibilhan ng mga bagay na’to. Remember this, DSLR cameras are interchangeable lens camera. So kung wala kang pang PERA para dun, mag point and shoot ka na lang na digicam. Ok. DON’T BE HARD ON YOURSELF TO ACHIEVE THE IMPOSSIBLE, TO DREAM THE UNDREAMABLE. Maawa ka sa sarili mo, baka last money mo na yan. Ok. Magpayaman ka muna, HINDI ung nakaipon ka lang ng 30k from being a CALL CENTER, or the so called SEO e gusto mo mag jump agad from DSLR photography.
NEXT TIME NA ULIT, at baka dumugo na ang ilong ng mga aspiring na magkaroon ng DSLR. Ok.

hi chymera00! just want to ask if ok. bang latest na labas ng kodak yung – may panoramic shots mukha syang dslr, forgot lang the model. pang personal use lang for my kids mahilig ksi kming magpicture-picture. we mostly use it sa out of town at sa mga recognitions nila. you know, pag may program sa school parents are not alllowed to go infront to take pictures. natry ko sya sa sm nung may nagdemo ok. naman din ang zoom nya kuha lang ako ng feeddbacks from other’s opinion kung ok. talaga sya. the price is P10k. nga pala sa mall. we’re planning to go to hidalgo as mura nga daw dun. tnx for your time and also okay nga itong post mo eh at least maraming natututo sa mga comments dito. Hello Ms. Tess. I can’t made a suggestion for you since I haven’t tried kodak. My advice is to ascertain the model number of the camera you’re planning to buy and google its reviews … like search for “Kodak xxxx reviews” or something to that effect.

Not sure why nagtaas nag price sa hidalgo, last March I inquired for D3100 in Henry’s and Avenue and its playign around 26-26.5 K last week I inquired and its increases to 27-27.5K(same store). For sure Mayers can give much lower price than this better to scout fisrt before going to mang Ramon.

Im selling my Canon EOS 7D with 2 lenses: kit lens 18-135mm and EF 135mm f/ 2L USM (with lens case and lens hood). These were bought in Dubai August last year by my husband who is a photo enthusiast. But honestly, di ko alam gamitin lahat ng features so auto-shot lang gngawa ko kaya sayang lang kasi I treat it as a “point and shoot” cam, prang digicam lang hehe! Nabibigatan ako so d ko gngamit (as in veeerrrry rarely used!) I got the gift-giver’s permission na benta na lang. Syempre kasama na battery, charger, panlinis (yung prang maliit na hand pump para mtanggal dust).
Kumpleto boxes, manual and isasama ko na camera bag (Case Logic 120.581 SLR suspension system). All these for 100k (whereas original UAE price was a little over 150k). Everything in great condition kasi nga takot akong gamitin. Actually the 2nd lens mentioned was never used.

Yun yun eh! Haha. Yan ang imba! Pero ako, gusto ko talaga matuto ng photography. Actually palagi akong nagbabasa sa net ng mga blogs o kaya naman ginugoogle ko ang mga techniques. One time may naglecture samin, isa syang Photo Journ and sobrang helpful ang lecture nya kahit basic lang, kasi alam ko na ang dapat ipakita sa cam. Yun pala yung dahilan kung bakit yung mga photos ng pros eh parang may bigat pag tiningnan mo. Parang may laman na di mo maintindihan. Sana nararamdaman nyo din yung feeling na ganun, di ko kasi ma-explain e.
Naiinggit nga ko sa mga classmates ko na mayaman, kasi may DSLR sila at ginagamit lang nila yung pang picture picture at iupload sa fb.
Kung may ganun lang ako, sana andami ko nang nagawang portfolio.
Anyway, meron naman akong mga shots at lahat yun kinuha ko gamit yung cellphone cam ko :) . Tas nung pinakita ko sa mga friends ko, natuwa sila, haha. Pero gusto ko parin talagang magka SLR.

So the warranty for service/parts is the reason for the cheaper(9k) prices at DBGadgets than Henry’s online shop? My Mom’s friend suggested we go to Hidalgo when we get to Manila, but when i saw the dbgadgets page, which is much cheaper, i thought i’d just opt for a meet-up. but i still feel doubtful with the price difference. i’ve already set my heart and eyes on a Canon 600d. I bought D3100 red today, 11/30 from Avenue. Yung kit ng black 26K, 27K yung red. Tinawadan ko na lang kaya nakuha ko yung red ng 26K. I wanted to buy just the body and a higher end lens pero kit talaga kahit saan.
Ang alam ko hindi pa napepeke ng chinese ang dslr coz of its complexity. Ang alam ko din sa ngayon lahat ng nikon sa thailand gawa kasi nagka problema sila sa kanilang pabrika sa Japan coz of tsunami.

Kung may pambili ka narin lang ng lens bilin mo nalang ay body wag mo na isama ang kitlens at bumili ka ng bukod na 18-105 mm lens good for portrait and landscape. Pero may isa suggest ako sayo pagaralan mo na muna mabuti ang kitlens mo madami na kasi magagawa yan,
minsan kahit sa mga matatagal ng gumagamit ng dslr hindi nila napapansin ang powers ng kitlens 18-55 mm lens, maari mo itong gamitin gaya ng kuha ng prime lens at pede rin magamit ito pagkuha ng macro photography, halimbawa yung mga insects, mahal kasi ang macro lens ang pinaka mura ay nasa 10k pataas, pero pag binaliktad mo ang kabit ng lens mo na kit, bumili ka lang ng macro reverse ring para maikabit mo na ang kitlens mo parehas din ng kuha ng mamahalin mga macrolens. Napaka mura lang ng reverse ring 350 lang against 12,000 macro lens ng nikkor.

almost all of the store in hidalgo may pentax. pero tumaas ung price nila ng 3k, i think its because of the warranty. yung napagtanungan ko kasi kahapon sa hidalgo ay ung warranty nila ay sa dealer na mismo. Like nikon, sa columbia na ang warranty.
