I couldn’t have thought of a better destination to kick-start my trip around mainland South East Asian than in, drum roll please …. Thailand! So cliché, I know, but this country took up the lion’s share of the “banana pancake trail” for a reason: It had something to offer for every traveler.

Even under grey skies and rough waters, Maya Bay in the Phi Phi Islands of Southern Thailand easily captured high ranks on my list of the most beautiful beaches. The ones I’ve had the pleasure of visiting, at least.
Like most, I was drawn to Maya Bay (and backpacking in general) after seeing the movie “The Beach,” which was filmed there.

I wanted to go to Southern Thailand so I could visit the secret island in “The Beach” movie. Cliche, I know! but I’ve been craving to go there for the longest time. Like a lot of backpackers, it was one of the iconic movies that inspired me to travel.
Taking cue from the perfect weather on my four-day visit to Langkawi, Malaysia, I sailed to Southern Thailand and started my exploration of the Andaman coast from Krabi town.

After visiting more than half of the Philippines’ eighty provinces and experiencing the overwhelming beauty of my country, It was time to venture out further and travel longer.
2012 was my most extensive travel year yet. I wandered around nine countries in South East Asia and did a couple of trips within the Philippines as well.

Uber cheap flight tickets, booked one year in advance, kicked-off my dream of finally embarking on a 10-week trip to Indochina. This well-trodden backpacking trail passes through countries located in the mainland part of South East Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
I didn’t have much time to plan any concrete itinerary or schedule.

Straying off course whether on purpose or unintentionally isn’t always a terrible thing. We might feel helpless from losing our bearings but if we keep ourselves open to whatever comes our way, we’re bound to discover that twists and turns make unexpected experiences equally satisfying.
My hopes of exploring the world took a detour when I fell prey to the challenges of being a Philippine passport holder.
