What brought me back to Siargao and Bucas Grande Island? That’s easy! These islands were among my favorites in the entire Philippines.
For years since my first visit to Surigao provinces, I craved intensely to go back and swim in the crystal-clear emerald waters of Sohoton lagoons with hundreds of non-sting jellyfish and finally ride the famous surf in Cloud9.

It was my first time to fly out of Davao International Airport and I was looking forward to seeing the interiors / pre-departure area of the airport.
Since I was on a morning flight and did not have a lot of time to spare, I took the taxi from downtown Davao. All taxis charge by the meter and the drivers in Davao are honest so this option is not a problem.

The dimming light during our late afternoon arrival in Samal Island set the mood for one unique attraction. We were set to visit the Monfort Bat Colony, known for being home to the largest colony of the Geoffrey’s Rousette Fruit Bats.
Me and Ferdie dropped off at Babak (near the pier) and hailed a motorcycle to take us to the bat colony.

Isla Reta is the most accessible beach in Talicud Island. It’s located right beside the Santa Cruz Pier, the main seaport at the northern tip of island. After visiting Babu Santa Beach, the habal-habal driver dropped me off at the entrance of Isla Reta Beach Resort (entrance fee: P75). I headed straight to the beachfront passing by the spacious overnight cottages.

An awesome thing about major cities in the Philippines is that excellent island getaways are just a short land/sea trip away. It was my last full day in Davao and I just couldn’t pass off the opportunity to visit Samal Island. The Pearl Farm Resort comes to mind with a mention of Samal but I wasn’t in any mood to splurge … so I fired up google maps and scoured for other potential (cheap) places to visit.

My first time travel to the southern corners of the Philippines finally started with a flight from Iloilo to Davao. Blue skies stretched endlessly into the horizon, I couldn’t have asked for better weather during my arrival at Davao International Airport. After exiting the plane, we had to walk on the runway to the arrivals area.

Three day travel itinerary during my first visit to Davao City in Mindanao Island (Southern Philippines). Since it was my first time, my focus was geared towards getting a personal view of the downtown area of Davao City,Samal Island, “meeting” the mighty Philippine Eagle, and eating an actual Durian fruit.

Seeing the endangered Philippine “monkey-eating” Eagle was one of the top items in my 3-day itinerary in Davao. There’s no more convenient way to cross this item off my “Davao bucket list” than to visit the Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) located in the Malagos district, Davao City.
